The HIKMICRO THUNDER TQ50CL 4.0 thermal clip-on succeeds the TQ50CL 3.0 and moves it a generation ahead: thermal sensitivity ≤ 12 mK, an in-lens laser rangefinder now reaching 1,200 m and a body 30 mm shorter than the TQ50CL 3.0. The 50 mm lens makes it the universal choice for open-country hunting and longer-range shooting, where reach is key.

The 640 × 512 px thermal sensor with 12 μm pixel pitch and a NETD ≤ 12 mK renders fur and antlers even at long range. The 50 mm F1.0 lens provides a detection range of up to 2,600 m (2,843 yd) and an 8.8° × 7.0° field of view, i.e. 15.4 m of coverage at 100 m. The higher base magnification in monocular mode (3.4×) is appreciated by hunters on open ground; the recommended day scope magnification is 1×–15×.

Image processing is handled by Image Pro 4.0, which continuously adjusts contrast and detail to the scene, while Sync Pro minimises the gap between what happens in front of the clip-on and what appears on the display. The HIKMICRO Shutterless Image System (HSIS) keeps the thermal image continuously visible without freezing, so nothing interrupts tracking. The laser rangefinder integrated in the lens measures the distance to the target up to 1,200 m, so there is no guessing on longer shots. Five calibration profiles store settings for five different rifles. The image is shown on a 1920 × 1080 px OLED display with 6 colour palettes.

Both the body and the lens cover are made of magnesium alloy. IP67 protection and 6,000 J maximum recoil mean the clip-on withstands rain, snow and heavy calibres. The built-in 64 GB memory stores photos and videos with audio, recoil-activated recording is a separate function, and recordings can be reviewed directly on the device. The Wi-Fi hotspot (2.4 / 5 GHz) connects the clip-on to the HIKMICRO Sight app, and USB-C connects it to a computer or power bank. The replaceable rechargeable battery lasts 6 hours with the rangefinder on; two are included. Holding the buttons switches the clip-on to monocular mode with 3.4×–27.2× magnification, so it also serves for observation. The scope adapter (M52 × 0.75 mm thread) is sold separately.

Typical use and recommendations:

We recommend the TQ50CL 4.0 to hunters on fields, meadows and open country, where game must be identified at 300–500 m and shots are taken at longer range. The 50 mm lens provides higher base magnification and more detail at distance, and with the laser rangefinder there is no need to estimate the range.

For dense woodland, where a wider field of view pays off, we recommend the TQ35CL 4.0. If you want reach and overview at the same time, the answer is the TX70CL 4.0 model with a 1280 px sensor, whose 70 mm lens offers a field of view comparable to a 35 mm model.
