The HIKMICRO THUNDER TX70CL 4.0 thermal clip-on is the top model of the fourth Thunder generation and the first Thunder model with a 1280 × 1024 px sensor. Together with thermal sensitivity ≤ 12 mK and a 70 mm F1.3 lens it delivers image detail the Thunder series has never offered before, plus an in-lens laser rangefinder reaching 1,200 m.

The 1280 × 1024 px sensor has four times the pixels of the 640 × 512 px models, so far more detail survives digital zoom and species or antlers can be identified at long range. The 70 mm lens gives a detection range of up to 3,500 m (3,828 yd), while the 12.8° × 10.3° field of view (22.4 m at 100 m) matches that of a 35 mm model. The recommended day scope magnification is 1×–15×.

Image processing is handled by Image Pro 4.0, which continuously adjusts contrast and detail to the scene, while Sync Pro minimises the gap between what happens in front of the clip-on and what appears on the display. The HIKMICRO Shutterless Image System (HSIS) keeps the thermal image continuously visible without freezing, so nothing interrupts tracking. The laser rangefinder integrated in the lens measures the distance to the target up to 1,200 m, so there is no guessing on longer shots. Five calibration profiles store settings for five different rifles. The image is shown on a 1920 × 1080 px OLED display with 6 colour palettes.

Both the body and the lens cover are made of magnesium alloy. IP67 protection and 6,000 J maximum recoil mean the clip-on withstands rain, snow and heavy calibres. The built-in 64 GB memory stores photos and videos with audio, recoil-activated recording is a separate function, and recordings can be reviewed directly on the device. The Wi-Fi hotspot (2.4 / 5 GHz) connects the clip-on to the HIKMICRO Sight app, and USB-C connects it to a computer or power bank. The replaceable rechargeable battery lasts 5 hours with the rangefinder on; two are included. Holding the buttons switches the clip-on to monocular mode with 2.4×–19.2× magnification, so it also serves for observation. The scope adapter (M52 × 0.75 mm thread) is sold separately.

We recommend the TX70CL 4.0 to the most demanding hunters and professionals who hunt large open-field grounds, identify species and sex at long range and want a top-class image even after digital zoom. The 1280 × 1024 px sensor with the 70 mm lens gives detail unavailable on 640 px models, while the 12.8° field of view keeps you aware of the surroundings.

Despite its top-class performance, the clip-on stays compact and easy to handle. For an all-night sit, a second replaceable battery is included in the package.
